Upscale Vegetarian: California Calibration
Wednesday, March 26 @ 18:58:26 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

Prior to this series of reports, I had little experience with vegetarian fine dining. Towards the end, I felt I had a pretty good handle on the strengths and weaknesses of the local options, but didn't know how Dallas would stack up against a top-tier food city with a robust vegetarian community. A trip to Northern California offered a chance to broaden my perspective. We begin in Yountville, California. On to the food...

Vegetarian

Jason Weaver has helmed the French Room for over two years now. Though I had generally enjoyed my non-veg meals there since he started, I wasn't sure what to expect when dining as a vegetarian. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Lola

Vegetarian

Unlike some chefs in Dallas who spend more time in the front of the house than in the kitchen, Chef David Uygur has made Lola a foodie favorite through behind-the-scenes dedication and passion for his craft. From his debut in the Tasting Room, Uygur has consistently demonstrated a deftness with vegetables, setting high expectations for my vegetarian meals at Lola. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Nana
Wednesday, November 07 @ 03:07:52 PST by Scott
Vegetarian

Dallas still doesn't have a full-blown molecular gastronomer, ala Ferran Adrià, Heston Blumenthal, Grant Achatz, Homaro Cantu, Wylie Dufresne, et al. I'm not sure the market would bear one. In the meantime, though, we do have Anthony Bombaci at Nana, who has consistently pushed to widen the narrow envelope of the Dallas palate. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Lanny's Alta Cocina Mexicana

Vegetarian

Though Dallas has been the focus of these reports, I had to make an exception for a notable Fort Worth restaurant. The series wouldn't be complete without visiting Lanny's Alta Cocina Mexicana, arguably the best Mexican restaurant in Texas. On to the food...

Upscale Vegetarian: Abacus
Wednesday, October 03 @ 17:51:07 PDT by Scott
Vegetarian

Despite a number of very good meals at Abacus over the years, my most enduring memories are of meat dishes. Their menu may be the most extensive and eclectic in the market, but meat appears in nearly everything. Their web site even quotes Fran Lebowitz, who wrote, "Vegetables are interesting, but lack a sense of purpose when unaccompanied by a good cut of meat." I feared Abacus might respond to the vegetarian challenge with a brick. On to the food…
