Well I lost Apparently the "new" critic is a chick after all. One Elaine Liner, formerly a fim/theater critic. Mentions draperies in the first paragraph She likes commas, long sentences, and probably walks on the beach. Does a good job describing the furniture and a poor job describing the protein.

Apparently, if I want to read about meat, the best I'm going to do is to reread old reviews. Poor me.

Don't burn your jock strap just yet, Luniz. Liner has contributed restaurant reviews at the Observer many times over the past few years (most of them before Faries returned). Absent an announcement, it's too early to tell if she's a replacement or (as I suspect) just a temporary sub.

In her first ever piece for the Observer (?), author Jenny Block reviews Bailey's something something. Apparently there's some number of these Bailey's steakhouses located here and there about the city.

Boy that's a long sentence. Shouldn''t editors chop those up into something easier to read?

I managed to dig a couple of earlier drafts out of their trash can:

I just noticed that Jenny Block is the author of a D Magazine love note that portrays an unscrupulous used car dealer in Carrollton as some sort of feminist hero. I first found that article after my daughter bought a car from the woman's dealership, only to have the AC conk out two weeks later despite assurances from the dealership that it had been repaired. The article's subject disavowed any responsibility, and flat out lied about the promises her dealership had made and the substandard work that had been done on the car. I found that the dealership had numerous unresolved BBB complaints, which now includes one that I filed. From personal dealings with the woman trying to get things resolved on my daughter's behalf, I learned that she is definitely not anything like the person portrayed in the article. At the time, I wondered whether Jenny Block (who I had never heard of) had any non-fiction writing experience, and also wondered how D had published such a glowing piece without doing appropriate due diligence on the dealer's track record.

Nickloubuc: I assume you weren't involved in that article, but whoever assigned it and approved it for publication really did the magazine's readers -- and people who still can access the article in D's archives -- a real disservice.
